Before You Go

Tell someone where you are going, when you will be back, and what route you are taking. This small amount of planning alone can prevent a survival situation.

If you have a GPS system with you please take along a compass.  Calibrate your system before you plan a trip into territory's that you are not familiar with.

Take a personal survival kit with you.  It should at least include the following:

  • Wear your LIFE VEST
  • All necessary medication
  • Band-aids and antiseptic
  • Large orange garbage bag
  • Matches and a small candle
  • Food (candy bar, etc.)
  • Individual sugar packets
  • Small mirror and magnifying glass
  • Flashlight
  • Knife
  • Whistle
  • Survival blanket
  • Needle and thread

In cold weather dress in layers. Clothing is extremely important, the protection against heat loss is adequate insulation and protection from moisture. Wool clothing has the property of keeping a person warm even when it is wet. A wool sweater with a windproof jacket over top creates the dead air space which makes good insulation.

Wear a hat. Most of your body heat is lost from your head.
